Like many of you, I was outraged by the way some politicians treated Judge Sonia Sotomayor as a result of her comment about being a wise Latina. She said: -I would hope that a wise Latina woman, with the richness of her experiences, would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life.- She said that to a law school audience at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2001.

She said at her hearing confirmation that it was a poor choice of words. That might be when she was referring to applying the law; but you and I believe that us, Latinas, wise Latinas, many times can make better decisions than men, any men. Whereas part of being wise also means to accept when we need to make decisions as a team, with our parents, with our spouses and partners, or with our children; it also means we can never accept anybody making decisions for us. We are strong, we are independent, and we are wise.

I hope you wear your shirt with pride; you are a Wise Latina!
